Weststar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd (WASSB) is an industry leader in offshore helicopter transportation and rotary wing aviation services sectors. WASSB has been catering to the oil and gas industry in Malaysia since 2008 with a 5-year offshore helicopter transportation services contract with Carigali Hess. To serve this maiden contract, a base in Kota Bharu was built to house the two Sikorsky S-76C++ helicopters.
In the first quarter of 2011, WASSB further strengthened its footing in the lucrative oil and gas marketplace after being awarded a contract to provide ten AW139 helicopters for five prominent oil and gas companies that include Petronas Carigali, ExxonMobil, SapuraKencana Energy, Talisman and Petrofac. This multibillion-landmark contract spans ten years and was the single largest contract ever awarded in the history of Malaysian helicopter oil and gas support sector.
Following this, various other major oil and gas contracts were awarded, significantly growing WASSB’s oil and gas clientele comprising of CPOC, TOTAL, KPOC, Lundin, WesternGeco, Hess, Shell, Tullow Oil, Mubadala Petroleum, CGG Veritas, ConocoPhillips, INPEX Offshore, Galp Energia Tarfayabb, PC Mauritania, Kosmos Energy, ENI and Chevron to date.
Two significant events took place in 2013. Prominently, WASSB scaled new heights after being awarded a contract to provide six AW139 helicopters for PTTEP from its base in Songkhla, Thailand. The contract made WASSB the largest offshore helicopter transportation services provider in South East Asia.
Following WASSB’s PTTEP contract, Kohlberg Kravis Robert (KKR), a leading global investment firm acquired a substantial minority equity stake in the company. Thus, KKR's first investment in Malaysia, the partnership enables WASSB to further ramp up growth in its international marketplace geographic reach and putting in place industry leading practices.
Currently, WASSB operates in five countries namely Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Morocco and Mauritania. Recently, WASSB was granted an Air Operating Certificate (AOC) approval in Indonesia. For WASSB’s newest regional market, WASSB deploys three helicopters for its operations in Jakarta and Balikpapan. The three helicopters consist of one unit of AS365N Dauphin and two AW139 helicopters.
Leveraging on the profound experience and expertise amassed from carrying out offshore missions in various challenging locations across three continents, WASSB has recently extended its scope of services to cater to a wider pool of clients. Broadening its rotary wing services into the realms of police aviation, maritime control and rescue and firefighting services, WASSB has effectively diversified its vast resources of a modern helicopter fleet and sound technical expertise into another revenue producer. To date, WASSB’s sound safety track record and industry-leading practices are recognized internationally. Pressing ahead, in years to come, WASSB is eyeing access to more vibrant and important markets across the globe to further expand its rotary wing aviation business.
